Our Sustainability Journey

Guided by values, driven by responsibility

Moana New Zealand’s Sustainability Strategy

Moana New Zealand has set an ambitious target to be carbon net zero by 2040. This target includes not only our own direct emissions but also those created downstream that we don’t have direct control over.

We acknowledge the connection between ngā tangata me te taiao (people and the environment) which are to be honoured for future generations. Led by tikanga and to be true to our value of kaitiakitanga, we engage with iwi, staff and stakeholders to identify, invest in and solve key sustainability challenges.

We invite you to read more about Moana New Zealand’s current sustainability research and strategy below.

Reducing Palmerston North’s Waste Footprint

Moana New Zealand has conducted waste audits across multiple sites nationwide, including the Prepared Foods Processing Limited factory in Palmerston North. Partnering with Envirowaste, the Palmerston North facility strategically optimised waste diversion methods, yielding a remarkable 50% reduction in the site’s waste footprint within the initial six months of execution.

This waste optimisation focus involved composting paper towels, staff food scraps, and non-edible organic scraps on-site or transporting them to Palmerston North City Council’s composting facilities. Furthermore, polystyrene was compacted and dispatched to appropriate recycling facilities in Wellington, while glass was responsibly returned to the manufacturers. Waste paper underwent shredding and was either utilised in on-site composting or sent for recycling, and cans and metals were meticulously directed to a specialist metal recycler.

The Palmerston North team has also phased out single-use hair and beard nets made from polyethylene, replacing them with reusable cotton. Additionally, the site's engagement with the local community has fostered strong ties with nearby farmers, who repurpose the site's organic waste as livestock feed. The site is also committed to eliminating polystyrene bins from its cool chain operations and transitioning to more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Annual River Clean-Up

Collaborating with local Iwi Rangitāne o Manawatū and the Palmerston North City Council, our Palmerston North staff actively participate in the annual Kawau River clean-up. This community-led initiative aims to restore the mauri (ecosystem health) of local waterways, with plastic pollution being a significant concern. During one clean-up event, our team collected over 166 kilograms of rubbish.

Reducing Power Consumption During Peak Time

Since 2020, Moana New Zealand’s Palmerston North site has been utilising Contact Energy's Demand Flexibility technology, enabling us to effortlessly decrease power usage from select equipment during peak demand periods, lending invaluable assistance to the electricity grid. This innovative solution complements our dedication to sustainable energy practices, allowing us to play an active role in supporting environmental initiatives. Working hand in hand with Contact Energy, we identified adaptable electrical equipment at our Palmerston North site, facilitating a smooth transition to the Demand Flexibility system.
